Can you trust wine app ratings?

Wine apps have completely changed how people choose bottles. Vivino leads with 65 million users and over 200 million ratings. CellarTracker, more geared toward enthusiasts, has about 10 million tasting notes. Both work on crowdsourcing: users rate wines from 1 to 5 stars (Vivino) or on a 100-point scale (CellarTracker).

But there are real limitations. Popularity bias is the biggest one — the most-rated wines aren't necessarily the best, just the most widely available. A supermarket wine with nice packaging can score 4.0/5 on Vivino simply because millions of casual drinkers gave it a thumbs-up.

Most users also aren't trained tasters, which means fruity, smooth, slightly sweet wines get higher marks than complex, tannic, or mineral wines that require some wine knowledge to appreciate.

Then there's manipulation. Some producers actively encourage positive reviews through competitions, giveaways, or even purchased ratings. Vivino has fraud detection, but it's not perfect.

Where apps genuinely shine is label scanning. Point your phone at a bottle in a shop and you instantly get the average price, food pairing suggestions, and a community score. That's incredibly useful for quick decisions.
