How to buy wine directly from a producer?

Buying wine directly from a producer is one of the most rewarding experiences for any wine lover. You meet the winemaker, taste in context, and often discover limited cuvées that never make it to shops.

Preparation matters. Contact the estate by phone or email at least a week ahead to book an appointment. Many small producers only receive visitors by appointment. Let them know what you're interested in — whites, reds, older vintages — so they can prepare a tailored tasting.

Prices at the estate are typically 20-40% below retail, since there's no distribution margin or transport cost. Some estates do maintain a single price (same as in shops) to avoid undercutting their retailers.

For transport, bring boxes or crates in your car boot, thermal insulation in summer (wine suffers above 25°C), and never leave bottles in direct sun. For larger purchases, many estates offer shipping via specialist carriers.

Regulations for Belgian residents: personal transport of wine within the EU is allowed up to 90 litres for still wine (120 standard bottles) and 60 litres for sparkling. Beyond that, you need to declare quantities and pay Belgian excise duties. Always keep your purchase receipts.

Closer to home, Belgium itself has a growing wine scene — visit Walloon estates like Château Bon Baron in Dinant, Domaine du Chenoy near Namur, or Vignoble des Agaises. Many hold open days each spring.
