What is Cornas wine?
Quick answer
Cornas is the most southerly Syrah appellation in the Northern Rhône, covering just 145 hectares in the commune of the same name in the Ardèche. It is the only Northern Rhône appellation producing exclusively red wine — 100% Syrah with no white grapes permitted in the blend. Cornas wines stand out for their raw power, inky colour, black fruit, olive, and earthy aromas, plus a formidable tannic structure that demands at least 5 to 15 years of ageing.
Detailed answer
Cornas takes its name from the Celtic word "corno" meaning "burnt earth" — fitting for a vineyard that forms a south-facing amphitheatre sheltered from northern winds by the Vercors massif. This exposure and protection create an exceptionally warm microclimate for the Northern Rhône, with some of the region's earliest harvests.
The appellation, granted AOC status in 1938, covers 145 hectares in the single commune of Cornas (Ardèche) on steep granite slopes ranging from 100 to 400 metres altitude. Soils are decomposed granite (arène granitique, locally called "gore"), schist, and limestone, varying significantly with altitude. The most renowned lieux-dits — Les Chaillots, La Geynale, Les Mazards, Reynards, Les Saveaux — each produce wines with distinct personalities.
Syrah is the sole permitted grape, with no option to add Marsanne or Roussanne (unlike Hermitage) or Viognier (unlike Côte-Rôtie). This varietal purity gives Cornas its uncompromising character. Yields are capped at 40 hl/ha.
The Cornas style is the Northern Rhône's most rugged and powerful. Young wines are nearly black, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black olive, violet, and earth. Tannins are firm, almost gripping, and patience is essential. After 10–20 years, the wines develop truffle, leather, liquorice, and forest floor complexity while retaining impressive substance.
Auguste Clape, the legendary vigneron who passed away in 2018, was the figure who brought Cornas international recognition. His son Pierre-Marie continues the legacy. Other benchmark producers include Thierry Allemand (natural winemaking, with legendary Chaillot and Reynard cuvées), Domaine du Tunnel, Alain Voge, and Vincent Paris. Prices have risen significantly in recent years (30–80 euros), reflecting a well-deserved but belated recognition.
