What is Muscadet?

Quick answer

Muscadet is a dry white wine from the western Loire Valley near Nantes, made exclusively from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. Covering about 8,000 hectares, it's best known in its 'sur lie' version, where the wine ages on its fine lees until at least March following harvest, giving it a creamy texture and subtle fizz. Three cru communaux — Clisson, Gorges, and Le Pallet — were established in 2011 to showcase the region's top terroirs.

Detailed answer

Muscadet is one of wine's greatest underdogs. For years it was dismissed as a simple café wine, but a quality revolution has made it one of France's most exciting white wines — and still one of its cheapest.

Made from Melon de Bourgogne (the only place in the world where this grape thrives), Muscadet gets its magic from lees ageing. The 'sur lie' designation means the wine stays in contact with its spent yeast cells until at least March after harvest, without racking. This gives it a richer texture, a hint of natural spritz, and a subtle bready complexity.

The real game-changer has been the introduction of cru communaux. Since 2011, three village-level appellations have been recognised: Clisson (granite soils, minimum 24 months on lees), Gorges (gabbro soils, 24 months), and Le Pallet (gneiss soils, 18 months). These wines are a revelation — complex, mineral, age-worthy, and still incredibly affordable at 10-18 euros.

Muscadet's secret weapon is its pairing versatility. The wine's combination of high acidity, low alcohol (11.5-12.5%), and subtle salinity makes it arguably the world's best white wine for oysters and shellfish. But the cru wines can handle much more — grilled fish, sushi, soft cheeses, even light poultry dishes.

Producers to seek out include Domaine de l'Écu (biodynamic pioneer), Luneau-Papin, Domaine de la Pépière, and Jo Landron. Their top cuvées prove that Muscadet can age 10-15 years, developing honey, hazelnut, and mineral notes that recall Chablis — at a fraction of the price.
