What is the most planted grape variety in the world?

Quick answer

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most planted grape variety at roughly 340,000 hectares, followed by Merlot (~266,000 ha). Including white grapes, Spain's Airén (used for brandy and table wine) long held the record but was overtaken by Cabernet Sauvignon around 2015.

Detailed answer

The global ranking of most-planted grapes reflects both market trends and regional viticultural realities.

Cabernet Sauvignon leads at roughly 340,000 hectares worldwide. Its expansion has been dramatic — doubling between 2000 and 2020, driven mainly by vineyard growth in China (where it is the number-one red grape), Chile, Australia and California. France accounts for only about 15% of the world's Cabernet Sauvignon plantings.

Merlot holds second place (about 266,000 hectares), dominant in Bordeaux but also widely planted in Italy, Chile and California.

Airén, a white Spanish grape grown on the vast plains of Castilla-La Mancha, long held the title of world's most planted variety thanks to Spain's enormous vineyard area. But vine-pulling schemes and production consolidation have reduced its footprint to roughly 220,000 hectares.

Tempranillo (~230,000 ha, Spain), Grenache/Garnacha (~160,000 ha), Syrah/Shiraz (~190,000 ha) and Chardonnay (~210,000 ha) round out the global top ranks. Pinot Noir (~115,000 ha), despite its fame, remains modest in area due to its demanding climate requirements.

A little-known fact: of the roughly 10,000 grape varieties identified worldwide, only about 50 account for over 90% of global production. This concentration threatens the genetic diversity of the vine.
