Organic wine is made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides (EU certified). Biodynamic wine follows a stricter, holistic approach inspired by Rudolf Steiner. Natural wine has no strict legal definition but typically means no additives and zero or minimal added sulfites.
Oak barrel ageing adds flavours like vanilla, toast and spice, allows gentle micro-oxygenation that softens tannins, and builds structure for longer ageing potential.
Champagne is made using the traditional method: after an initial fermentation, a second fermentation happens inside the bottle when yeast and sugar are added, creating the signature bubbles. Non-vintage Champagne ages on its lees for at least 15 months; vintage Champagne requires a minimum of 36 months.
Rosé is made mainly by two methods: short maceration (red grape skins soak briefly with the juice for 2-24 hours) or direct pressing (red grapes are pressed immediately, extracting minimal colour). It is never a blend of red and white wine, except for rosé Champagne, where blending is an accepted technique.
Natural wine is made with minimal intervention: organically or biodynamically grown grapes, fermentation with wild yeast only, no additives, and zero or very low added sulfites, typically under 30 mg/L.
Orange wine is white wine made like a red: the skins of white grapes stay in contact with the juice for days or even months, giving it an amber or orange hue and a tannic texture unusual for a white.
Sulfur, in the form of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), is added to wine as a preservative. It prevents oxidation and stops unwanted bacteria and wild yeast from spoiling the wine — making it the oldest and most effective winemaking preservative.
Vegan wine is made without any animal-derived products. The key difference is in fining: conventional wines often use egg white, casein (milk protein) or gelatine to clarify the wine, while vegan wines use plant-based alternatives like bentonite clay or pea protein, or skip fining entirely.
Fermentation is the biochemical process in which yeast converts the grape's natural sugars (glucose and fructose) into ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide. It is the essential step that turns grape juice into wine.
Non-alcoholic wines start as regular wines, then have their alcohol removed after fermentation, usually by vacuum distillation (at low temperature to preserve flavour) or reverse osmosis (membrane filtration). The result contains less than 0.5% ABV.
France has 17 major wine regions, with Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, the Rhône Valley, the Loire, Alsace and Languedoc-Roussillon being the most famous. With roughly 750,000 hectares under vine, France is the world's second-largest wine producer.
Bordeaux is built on blends (Cabernet Sauvignon + Merlot) from large estates (châteaux), while Burgundy focuses on single varieties (Pinot Noir for reds, Chardonnay for whites) and classifies by individual vineyard plot (climat). The styles differ dramatically: power and structure in Bordeaux, finesse and terroir expression in Burgundy.
Burgundy is expensive because of extreme scarcity (tiny vineyards, low yields), surging global demand, highly fragmented ownership (a producer may own just a few rows in a Grand Cru) and astronomical land values, up to 15 million euros per hectare for Grand Cru plots.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a prestigious appellation in the southern Rhône Valley, producing powerful reds and rich whites. It permits 13 different grape varieties and is famous for its large rounded stones (galets roulés) that retain heat and radiate it back to the vines at night.
Both Champagne and Crémant are sparkling wines made by the traditional method (second fermentation in bottle). The key difference is origin: Champagne can only come from the Champagne region, while Crémant is produced in other French regions, Alsace, Loire, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Jura, Limoux, Die and Savoie.
A Grand Cru Classé is a wine from an estate (in Bordeaux) or a vineyard plot (in Burgundy, Alsace) officially ranked at the top of the quality hierarchy. The meaning varies by region: in Bordeaux it classifies estates; in Burgundy it classifies vineyard plots.
AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) and AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) are labels certifying that a wine comes from a defined geographical area and meets strict production rules, approved grapes, yield limits and winemaking methods. AOP is the EU-wide equivalent of France's AOC system.
Italy, the world's largest wine producer, excels with its top-tier DOCG wines: Barolo and Barbaresco (Piedmont, Nebbiolo grape), Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Sangiovese), Amarone della Valpolicella (Veneto) and the celebrated Super Tuscans. Top whites include Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino.
Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine produced mainly in Veneto and Friuli from the Glera grape. Unlike Champagne, it uses the Charmat method (second fermentation in pressurised tanks, not in bottle), resulting in fresh bubbles and aromas of green apple, pear and white flowers.
Rioja is a Spanish wine from the region of the same name in northern Spain, along the Ebro river. It was Spain's first DOCa (qualified appellation), famous for elegant reds based on the Tempranillo grape, classified by ageing time: Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.
