The Spanish Wine Revolution: Why Spain Is the World's Best Value

Old vines, new ideas: how Spain became the smart drinker's paradise

Updated April 2026 | By expertvin — Belgium's Wine Specialist

Spain has more vineyard area than any country on Earth, some of the oldest vines in Europe, and a new generation of winemakers producing world-class wines at prices that make France and Italy look expensive. From the venerable Gran Reservas of Rioja to the volcanic Garnachas of forgotten mountain villages, Spanish wine offers the most extraordinary value proposition in the wine world today. This guide maps the revolution.

The Classics Reimagined

Rioja and Ribera in 2026

Rioja is split between traditionalists (López de Heredia, La Rioja Alta — American oak, long aging, ethereal elegance) and modernists (Artadi, Remírez de Ganuza — French oak, single vineyards, power). Both are excellent. The new "Viñedo Singular" classification recognizes single vineyards for the first time. Ribera del Duero has matured beyond its Robert Parker phase — wines are now more balanced, less extracted, more terroir-focused. Dominio del Águila and Goyo García Viadero represent the new wave.

Where the Real Value Lives

Under-the-radar Spain

Old Vine Garnacha from Calatayud, Campo de Borja, and Navarra: 80-100 year old vines, concentrated fruit, €5-8 per bottle. Nothing else in the world offers this quality at this price. Mencía from Bierzo: Spain's answer to Pinot Noir — elegant, mineral, floral, €10-20. Descendientes de J. Palacios and Raúl Pérez are geniuses. Sherry: The most undervalued wine category on Earth. Fino and Manzanilla from Jerez are complex, bone-dry, food-perfect wines for €8-15. Cava Reserva: Traditional method sparkling from Penedès at €8-12 — a credible Champagne alternative.

Priorat: Spain's Grand Cru

Priorat is Spain's most prestigious wine region after Rioja. Old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena on steep llicorella (slate) terraces produce wines of extraordinary concentration and minerality. Alvaro Palacios (L'Ermita, Finca Dofí) put Priorat on the map. Clos Mogador, Clos Erasmus, and Mas Doix continue the excellence. Prices: €20-50 for excellent Priorat, €100-500 for the icons. For Spain, that's the premium tier. For Burgundy Grand Cru quality, it's a steal.

Frequently asked

  • What is the best value Spanish wine?

Old vine Garnacha from Calatayud or Campo de Borja at €5-8 is the single best value in the wine world. Nothing else matches that quality-to-price ratio. For a step up: Jumilla Monastrell (€6-10), Bierzo Mencía (€10-15), Rioja Reserva (€12-20). All on expertvin.be.

  • Is Spanish wine underrated?

Massively. Spain has more vineyard area than France or Italy, some of Europe's oldest vines, diverse terroirs, and prices held low by market perception. A €15 Rioja Reserva delivers what a €30 Bordeaux or €40 Burgundy does. The market is slowly catching on — buy now.

  • Why is Sherry so cheap?

Market failure. Sherry (Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado) is among the most complex wines made — aged via the solera system for 5-30+ years. But decades of association with cheap cream Sherry destroyed its image. The result: extraordinary aged wines for €8-20. Sommeliers know. The public is catching up.

  • What is Priorat?

A tiny wine region in Catalonia with 100+ year old Garnacha vines on steep slate (llicorella) terraces. Produces Spain's most concentrated, mineral, complex red wines. Alvaro Palacios created the modern reputation in the 1990s. Prices are premium for Spain (€20-100+) but cheap for this quality level globally.

  • Rioja: American oak or French oak?

Traditional Rioja uses American oak (vanilla, coconut, sweet spice). Modern Rioja uses French oak (cedar, toast, structure). Neither is "better" — they're different styles. López de Heredia's American oak Gran Reservas are as great as Artadi's French oak single vineyards. Try both and decide.

  • Where to buy Spanish wine in Belgium?

expertvin.be offers a curated Spanish selection from Rioja to Priorat, old vine Garnacha to Sherry, delivered across Belgium via expertvin.

  • What is the best vintage of Rioja?

The beauty of Rioja's aging system: Gran Reservas arrive mature. Current releases (2015-2017 Gran Reserva) are ready to drink. For modern single-vineyard Rioja, 2016, 2018, 2019 are excellent. Ribera del Duero: 2018 and 2019 are outstanding.
