Roussanne is the more aromatic, finer-boned partner to Marsanne in the northern Rhône's white wines. Grown on about 2,500 hectares, it brings elegance, herbal tea aromas, apricot, and bright acidity to the blends of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It's trickier to grow than Marsanne, but the quality payoff is worth it.
Marsanne is a full-bodied white grape from France's northern Rhône Valley, grown on about 3,500 hectares worldwide. Often blended with Roussanne, it produces the rich, golden whites of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph. Expect almond, white peach, beeswax, and hazelnut flavours with a lush, almost oily texture.
Verdejo is Spain's answer to Sauvignon Blanc — a zesty, aromatic white grape grown mainly in the Rueda region of Castilla y León on about 13,000 hectares. It delivers lime, passionfruit, fresh herbs, and a distinctive bitter-almond finish that sets it apart from other crisp whites. Outstanding value for money.
New Zealand, with roughly 42,000 hectares of vines across two islands, has become a global wine reference within a single generation. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (about 60% of total production) redefined the grape worldwide with its uniquely intense aromatics. But the country's best wines also include Central Otago and Martinborough Pinot Noir, Hawke's Bay Chardonnay and Syrah, and Alsace-style Riesling from Nelson and Waipara.
Puligny-Montrachet is a Côte de Beaune appellation in Burgundy, widely regarded as the pinnacle of Chardonnay worldwide. The vineyard covers roughly 210 hectares at village level, with 17 Premier Cru climats and, crucially, four Grand Cru vineyards shared with Chassagne-Montrachet: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and Chevalier-Montrachet. Puligny wines are defined by their crystalline purity, cutting minerality, and aromas of citrus, white flowers, and almond — a more taut and vertical style than neighbouring Meursault.
Cornas is the most southerly Syrah appellation in the Northern Rhône, covering just 145 hectares in the commune of the same name in the Ardèche. It is the only Northern Rhône appellation producing exclusively red wine — 100% Syrah with no white grapes permitted in the blend. Cornas wines stand out for their raw power, inky colour, black fruit, olive, and earthy aromas, plus a formidable tannic structure that demands at least 5 to 15 years of ageing.
Lebanon is one of the world's oldest winemaking cradles — the Phoenicians were exporting wine 5,000 years ago — and today cultivates roughly 2,000 hectares of vines, mostly in the Bekaa Valley at 900 to 1,100 metres altitude. The country specialises in red blends (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, and indigenous varieties) with a deep, spicy Mediterranean character. Château Musar, founded in 1930, is Lebanon's most famous estate worldwide, renowned for unfiltered wines that can age 30 years or more.
Australia's wine scene stretches across roughly 146,000 hectares and 65 Geographic Indications (GI regions), producing world-class wines far beyond the Barossa Shiraz stereotype. The best include century-old-vine Barossa Shiraz (Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace), Eden Valley and Clare Valley Riesling, Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Yarra Valley and Tasmanian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Hunter Valley Sémillon. Australia is also at the forefront of innovation with natural wines and alternative grape varieties.
The Saint-Émilion classification is a unique Bordeaux hierarchy that gets revised approximately every ten years — unlike the fixed 1855 Médoc classification. Created in 1955, it has two tiers: Premiers Grands Crus Classés (subdivided into A and B) and Grands Crus Classés. The most recent (and controversial) 2022 revision listed 14 Premiers Grands Crus Classés (including 2 in category A: Figeac and Pavie) and 71 Grands Crus Classés, though the voluntary withdrawal of Cheval Blanc and Ausone in 2022 shook the system to its foundations.
Gigondas is a Southern Rhône cru nestled at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Vaucluse, covering roughly 1,230 hectares. Promoted from Côtes du Rhône Villages to full cru status in 1971, it is one of the few appellations that can genuinely rival Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The red wines (97% of production) are Grenache-dominated blends (minimum 50%) with Syrah, delivering power, concentration, and aromas of dark fruit, garrigue, and spice with 10 to 20 years of ageing potential.
Vouvray is a Loire Valley appellation east of Tours in the Touraine region, producing exclusively white wines from Chenin Blanc (locally called "Pineau de la Loire") across roughly 2,100 hectares. What makes Vouvray unique is its range of styles — dry (sec), off-dry (demi-sec), sweet (moelleux), and sparkling (méthode traditionnelle) — all from the same grape on the same tuffeau limestone terroir. The finest sweet Vouvray wines rank among the world's longest-lived whites, with ageing potential exceeding 50 years.
Sancerre is an AOC wine from the Loire Valley (Centre-Loire), famous for its vibrant, mineral dry whites made from Sauvignon Blanc. The appellation also produces reds and rosés from Pinot Noir. Its varied soils — flint, limestone and Kimmeridgian marl — yield three distinctly different white wine styles.
Pouilly-Fumé is a Loire Valley appellation producing exclusively white wines from Sauvignon Blanc across roughly 1,350 hectares around the commune of Pouilly-sur-Loire in the Nièvre department. The "fumé" (smoky) name refers both to the grey bloom on ripe berries and to the distinctive smoky-mineral character of these wines. Grown on flint (silex), Kimmeridgian limestone, and marl soils, Pouilly-Fumé delivers a Sauvignon Blanc of greater minerality and complexity than most, standing distinct from neighbouring Sancerre.
Corsican wines come from a Mediterranean island vineyard of about 5,800 hectares, organised under the AOC Vin de Corse with five geographic sub-designations (Calvi, Sartène, Figari, Porto-Vecchio, Coteaux du Cap Corse) plus two independent AOCs: Ajaccio and Patrimonio. The signature grapes are Nielluccio (related to Sangiovese) for reds and Vermentino (Rolle) for whites. Shaped by maquis scrubland, sea salt, and granite, these are some of France's most exciting rediscoveries.
South Africa's wine scene, concentrated across roughly 93,000 hectares in the Western Cape province, has become one of the world's most exciting thanks to a Mediterranean climate cooled by Atlantic currents. Its standout wines include old-vine Chenin Blanc from Swartland, Syrah from Stellenbosch and Swartland, Pinotage (the country's signature grape, a Pinot Noir x Cinsault cross), and Bordeaux-style blends from Stellenbosch. South Africa is also home to the Old Vine Project, protecting vines over 35 years old.
Greek wine draws on over 4,000 years of winemaking tradition across roughly 63,000 hectares on the mainland and islands. With more than 300 indigenous grape varieties — including Assyrtiko (the volcanic white of Santorini), Xinomavro (the "Greek Nebbiolo" from Naoussa), and Agiorgitiko (Nemea's fruity red) — Greece offers a wine identity found nowhere else. Savoie wines come from an Alpine vineyard of roughly 2,100 hectares spread across Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Isère, and Ain in eastern France, under the AOC Vin de Savoie with its 17 geographic crus. Whites dominate at about 70% of production, led by the indigenous Jacquère grape — crisp, mineral, and delightfully refreshing — plus Altesse (Roussette) and Bergeron (the local name for Roussanne). Portugal packs a remarkable wine punch across roughly 194,000 hectares, with over 250 indigenous grape varieties that make its wines genuinely unlike anything else. Beyond Port, the country's best bottles include powerful Douro reds (Barca Velha, Quinta do Vale Meão), crisp Vinho Verde whites, structured Alentejo reds, refined Dão wines, and extraordinary century-old Madeiras. Its secret weapon is a grape heritage — Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alvarinho, Encruzado — that simply can't be replicated anywhere else.
Pauillac is the most prestigious appellation in Bordeaux's Médoc, covering about 1,213 hectares on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. It is home to three of the five First Growths from the 1855 Classification — Lafite Rothschild, Latour, and Mouton Rothschild — plus 15 other classified châteaux. Pauillac wines, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, are celebrated for their power, depth, blackcurrant and cedar aromas, and extraordinary ageing potential that can exceed 50 years.
Margaux is the largest of the six communal appellations in Bordeaux's Médoc, covering roughly 1,493 hectares across five communes (Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac, and Labarde). It holds 21 of the 61 classified growths from the 1855 Classification, including the legendary Château Margaux, a Premier Grand Cru Classé. Margaux wines are prized for their elegance, silky tannins, and aromas of violet and dark fruit — a style often described as the most "feminine" of the Médoc.
