Savagnin covers about 600 hectares and is also making waves in a fresh, non-oxidative 'ouillé' style.
Trousseau is a rare, delicate red grape from France's Jura region, grown on just about 200 hectares — mostly around Arbois. It makes pale, perfumed reds with wild strawberry, redcurrant, and white pepper notes. Think of it as the Jura's answer to Pinot Noir: light-coloured but complex and incredibly food-friendly.
Both are mutations of Pinot Noir, but that's where the similarity ends. Pinot Gris (grey-pink skin) makes rich, full-bodied wines with pear, smoke, and honey — often off-dry. Pinot Blanc (yellow-green skin) is lighter, crisper, and drier with apple and almond notes. Think of Pinot Gris as the luxurious one and Pinot Blanc as the refreshing everyday one.
Tannat is one of the most tannic grapes in the world — the name literally comes from 'tannin.' Native to southwest France (Madiran), it produces inky, powerful reds with intense blackberry, cassis, and liquorice. Grown on about 8,000 hectares worldwide, it's become Uruguay's national grape, where a gentler climate produces a softer, fruitier style.
Melon de Bourgogne is the grape behind Muscadet — France's ultimate oyster wine. Grown exclusively in the Pays Nantais near the Loire's Atlantic coast on about 11,000 hectares, it makes bone-dry, mineral whites with lemon, green apple, and saline notes. Aged on its lees ('sur lie'), it develops a creamy richness that's irresistible with seafood.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most planted grape variety at roughly 340,000 hectares, followed by Merlot (~266,000 ha). Including white grapes, Spain's Airén (used for brandy and table wine) long held the record but was overtaken by Cabernet Sauvignon around 2015.
Petit Verdot is Bordeaux's secret seasoning grape — traditionally used in tiny amounts (2-5%) to add colour, tannin, and violet perfume to blends. Grown on about 10,000 hectares worldwide, it's now having a second life as a standalone wine in warmer climates like Spain, Australia, and Argentina, where it ripens fully and produces inky, powerful, violet-scented reds.
